“Today, in a historic step forward, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee approved legislation to transform our broken health care system.
The HELP health care reform bill includes several welcome and badly needed advances. It would make health insurance coverage more affordable for families — both by limiting the amount of out-of-pocket costs they assume for their care and by providing subsidies to low-income families. It would stop insurance companies from discriminating against people based on pre-existing conditions, gender or health status. It also would begin to slow skyrocketing costs by changing the way we deliver and pay for health care, prioritizing value over volume and promoting quality, coordinated care and reducing waste.
The American people know that our health care system is broken and needs transformational change. The magnitude and urgency of the crisis we face demands bold and immediate action. To do anything else is both morally and fiscally irresponsible.
We applaud the HELP Committee for bringing us one step closer to meaningful reform that delivers quality, affordable health care for all.”
