“Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto of a bill that would let approximately one million workers in New York City earn paid sick days is short-sighted and the City Council should act quickly to make its effect short-lived. The mayor’s objections are based on outdated, specious arguments advanced by opponents, and he should know better. This legislation will offer welcome, long overdue benefits to the city, working families, businesses, the local economy and the public’s health.

The good news for New Yorkers is that the City Council demonstrated a clear understanding of the need for and benefits of paid sick days standards when it voted 45-3 to approve this common sense proposal last month. This means that it is only a matter of time before this bill becomes law and a fifth city paves the way for the national paid sick days standard America’s workers and families need.”
