MEDIA ALERT: New Survey Examines Consumer Experiences with Health IT, Gauges Impact of Growing Access to EHRs, Identifies Strategies for Patient Engagement

With the public discourse tightly focused on how doctors, hospitals and vendors view the federal health information technology (IT) program, an in-depth new survey probes consumer experiences with and attitudes toward this revolution in health care. The survey, conducted by Harris Poll for the National Partnership for Women & Families at the fifth anniversary of the federal meaningful use incentive program, will be released on an audio press briefing at:

    The online survey of more than 2,000 respondents — with oversamples of Hispanics, Blacks/African Americans and Asian Americans — details consumer experiences with both electronic and paper medical record systems. A follow-up to a 2011 survey, it identifies trends in consumer views about electronic vs. paper records, their concerns and confidence about privacy, and how different populations use health IT in different ways. It offers guidance for enhancing the effectiveness of Electronic Health Record (EHR) adoption in improving the quality and cost effectiveness of care, increasing patient engagement and guiding delivery system reform. The survey report includes recommendations for multiple communities including providers, policymakers and employers.

    The new national survey was funded by the California HealthCare Foundation.
