Trump Administration’s Latest Attempt at ACA Sabotage Would Drive Up Health Insurance Costs and Cut Protections for Women and Families

“In yet another attack on the health and economic security of women and families, the Trump administration today released a proposed rule that would destabilize the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance marketplace and drive up costs for women and people with pre-existing conditions.

By rescinding federal restrictions on the sale of short-term plans, this callous proposal would reverse many of the gains women and families have achieved under the ACA. It would allow insurance companies to sell more policies that charge women more than men and that charge people higher premiums based on their medical histories, which is particularly damaging for women. Many people who are sick and/or older would be stuck with skimpy coverage that fails to cover their basic needs.

Instead of sabotaging the ACA and rigging the system so vulnerable people have to spend their hard-earned money on plans that do not provide the coverage they need, lawmakers should be working together to strengthen our health care system. Only then will we have any hope of connecting all women and families with quality, affordable health coverage.”
