“Beginning today the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in three cases that could have grave consequences for LGBTQ people – at work, in health care, housing and education. Title VII and several other federal laws that prohibit sex discrimination have been correctly interpreted by courts and government agencies to protect LGBTQ people, but these rights are eroding under the current administration, which has been consistently hostile to the LGBTQ community. The cases being argued represent another threat as they ask the Court to take away existing employment protections.
No one should have to live in fear of being fired or denied a promotion simply because of who they are or who they love. It’s abhorrent to allow employers to fire someone for being trans or lesbian, gay or bisexual, and 70 percent of Americans agree.
Regardless of the Court’s decision, we will continue to fight for federal protections for LGBTQ people in public spaces. That’s why we are imploring Congress to pass the Equality Act, which would add critical new protections from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, and strengthen protections from discrimination on the basis of sex.”
