Press Statement
Congress Must Build on Infrastructure Package with Investments in Care and Family Infrastructure

“While the Senate took an important step forward in advancing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, this bill is just one piece of rebuilding our economy. The reality is 90 percent of traditional infrastructure jobs are held by men. Congress must do more to support women and people of color who have been devastated by this pandemic and rebuild our economy in a way that is equitable for all. It’s time to invest in the human infrastructure that makes all other work and economic prosperity possible.

“I applaud Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Budget Committee Chairman Sanders for introducing a budget resolution that includes much-needed investments in addressing the long-standing inequities across our society – especially access to paid family and medical leave, health care and caregiving.

“This is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to finally provide guaranteed access to paid family and medical leave for all workers. The National Partnership has been a champion for family and medical leave since it led the fight for the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in 1993 and we are hopeful that Congress will take this opportunity to finally ensure that anyone who needs to take time off work to care for themselves or a loved one no longer has to risk their job or their paycheck.

“We urge Congress to swiftly advance the budget resolution and advance these key components of the Build Back Better agenda.”
