Dr. Tori Coan is the research manager for economic justice at the National Partnership for Women & Families.
Their research explores how state and federal safety nets disparately impact unpaid caregivers across race, class, and gender identities. While completing their PhD, they worked as a research intern at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, conducting research on SNAP work requirements, employment barriers facing unpaid caregivers, and single mothers’ experiences with guaranteed income initiatives.
Prior to graduate school, Tori worked as a legislative director in the Maryland House of Delegates. Their legislative portfolio included bills to establish paid family and medical leave insurance, expand the Child Tax Credit, and close corporate tax loopholes.
They hold a PhD in Sociology from Ohio State University, where their dissertation examined how family caregivers rely on credit card debt in mid and late life to make ends meet.
When they aren’t elbows deep in R, they enjoy thrifting, swimming, and starting projects they may or may not finish.
