Press Statement
House of Representatives Vote to Dismantle Title X Rule is ‘Another Harmful Attack on Women’s Health,’ Ness Says

“Extreme politicians in Congress demonstrated their disregard for public health and the needs of women and families by voting to dismantle President Obama’s rule reinforcing Title X protections today. As the nation’s family planning program, Title X ensures that 4 million people can access critical health care services, including family planning services, cancer screenings, well-woman exams and screenings and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

With today’s vote, the U.S. House of Representatives opened the door for state politicians to ignore the law and deny Title X funds to highly qualified health care providers and entities that can offer the services people need in their own communities. Without access to these health care providers, people who already face systemic barriers to health care access, such as low-income communities and communities of color, will very likely go without the care they need.

This is yet another harmful attack on women’s health. Voters did not give Congress a mandate to deny women’s access to critical health care services, and this damaging politicization of women’s health must end. We strongly urge the Senate to protect Title X and access to high-quality reproductive health care for millions.”
