Press Statement
Trump Signs Harmful Bill That Will Deprive Millions of Health Care and Food Assistance

Statement of Jocelyn Frye, President of the National Partnership for Women & Families

Today, President Trump signed the Republican budget bill that will undermine the health and economic security of millions of people who rely on essential programs like Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for health care coverage and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for food assistance.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 4, 2025 – The president has chosen to use Independence Day as a platform to sign a bill that will hurt far too many families who rely on our nation’s social safety net, all for the purpose of enriching the wealthiest at the expense of those with the least. No one is fooled by empty rhetoric, fanfare, and deceptive budgetary that just doesn’t add up.

This law will do nothing to reduce the deficit and rein in spending. Instead, it will shutter hospitals in rural areas and dramatically reduce access to healthy food and nutrition for hundreds of thousands of mothers and children.

Many of these drastic cuts won’t take effect until after the election, a clear sign that the president and his allies recognize the law’s widespread unpopularity and devastating impact. But delay and deception won’t change facts.

As a result of this cruel and reckless law, we will likely see an acceleration of the suffering and economic decline that too many communities are already facing. This is especially true for marginalized communities, including people of color, people living with lower incomes and immigrants. This bill also will be especially harmful for women, particularly those seeking out prenatal care and a safe place to give birth and care for infants in their earliest moments, moms trying to hold jobs and ensure their families have health care, and women struggling to cover rising costs for items such as food while dealing with safety net programs that may soon be out of reach.

Ignoring the harm this bill will cause is shameful and inconsistent with the values we claim to celebrate. Jeopardizing the health and security of millions of families to finance a windfall for the wealthy and elite is not worthy of the principles of democracy that bind us together as one nation for all. Despite the president’s actions, the National Partnership remains committed to fighting to advance justice for all until our nation finally lives up to its founding ideals.
