Statement by National Partnership president Jocelyn Frye
WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 6, 2024 – In this election, much was at stake. Voters across the country, and especially women, went to the polls motivated by issues of deep concern like economic security, better wages, caregiving supports, access to reproductive health care, and upholding individual freedoms.
This year was even more significant because, for the first time in our nation’s history, a woman of color secured the nomination for the presidency from one of the two major political parties. Regardless of the election’s outcome, this milestone was historic and consequential and has inspired millions of women and people from all walks of life, including future generations.
The sharp divisions within the electorate about the candidate best suited to address our nation’s challenges do not alter the fact that women and their families deserve real solutions to the pressing problems they face. Women should not be an afterthought – they are integral to the success of our economy, our health care delivery system, our communities, and our nation.
Our mission at the National Partnership to make concrete improvements in the lives of women and families is not contingent on any one candidate or any one election. We are squarely focused on pursuing the policies that women say they want and need and the policies that can make their lives better, help them navigate work-family conflicts, access reproductive health care, become economically stable, and secure fair pay.
We are clear about what progress does and does not look like, and we will fight for policy solutions that actually work in practice and not in name only. Going backward on hard-won rights and protections is not an option. We know that progress does not always come easily or occur in a straight line forward. There are setbacks and disappointments and hurdles to overcome. But, we are unflinching in our resolve to push forward towards a vision where gender is never a barrier for a person to live the life they want to lead. Our task is to stay focused, determined, persistent, and unbroken in the fight for fairness and justice. We are ready.
