New Report: More Than 40% of Georgia Veterans Rely on Social Security

The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy and National Partnership for Women & Families Highlight the Importance of Social Security Benefits for Georgia’s Veterans and Military Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 3, 2025 – The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy (CFFE) in collaboration with the National Partnership for Women & Families (NPWF) has just released a report analyzing the impact of Social Security benefits for Georgia veterans and their families.

According to the report, about 604,200 veterans live in Georgia and more than 40 percent receive Social Security. Even before retirement age, many veterans rely on Social Security, with veterans under 62 making up 40 percent of all veterans who receive Supplemental Security Income.

In the report, stories of veterans in Georgia who receive Social Security benefits – like Donna Wesley – are highlighted to show the importance of the program, and the impact cuts would have. Donna is a retired Air Force veteran and federal government employee who relies on her Social Security. She believes that, “A person’s quality of care shouldn’t be based on their zip code. We have proudly served our country and that service should be honored. Our government must keep its promise to fully fund Social Security and the VA. Both of these programs are lifelines for seniors like me and we rely on them to live with dignity.”

“Donna and countless other Georgia veterans have made untold sacrifices for their country, often facing physical and emotional hardship. Anything short of fully funding their Social Security benefits is a breach of the fundamental contract that we’ve long held with veterans – a promise of security and support in their later years – and a profound betrayal of their sacrifice,” said Keauna Gregory, Georgia state director of the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy. “These benefits are not a handout; they are earned and a cornerstone of their financial stability. As the cost of living continues to increase, Social Security remains one of the most vital lifelines for our veterans, seniors, disabled communities and all those who depend upon it to live with dignity.”

“Our veterans put their lives on the line and they deserve to receive what is due to them,” said Sharita Gruberg, vice president for Economic Justice at the National Partnership for Women & Families. “In this economy, and with costs for everyday needs rising, losing income can be catastrophic, especially for retired workers whose Social Security benefits help ensure they can pay their bills and put food on the table.”

For 90 years, Social Security has been part of the contract our government made with those who served. Under the Trump administration, cuts to Social Security’s staffing, local offices and even funding are threatening to break that contract. Georgia’s veterans worked hard for this country and earned their benefits – we must continue to honor their sacrifice by protecting Social Security.
