Louisiana Wants a California Doctor Extradited To Face Abortion Charges. Newsom Isn’t Having It.

POLITICO, January 14, 2026

After Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill sought to extradite a California doctor accused of violating Louisiana’s abortion laws on Tuesday, Governor Gavin Newsom refused to extradite the California doctor. California is one of the states that enacted a shield law that protects California providers from professional, legal or civil consequences for providing abortions. Newsom said in a statement, “We will not allow extremist politicians from other states to reach into California and try to punish doctors based on allegations that they provided reproductive health care services. Not today. Not ever.”

Republicans Push for Abortion Pill Study as States Ask for Bans

Bloomberg Law, January 14, 2026

The Senate Health Committee held a hearing on Wednesday about the safety and accessibility of abortion medication. At the hearing, Senate Republicans pushed for clarity from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over a long-awaited safety study of abortion medication. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also testified at the hearing, urging the committee to think about pre-empting abortion shield laws. Democrats opposed the idea of even having a hearing, noting that mifepristone has widely been proven to be safe, and that limited research stating otherwise has been discredited.

Even though HHS restored the funds, Brigitte Amiri, the deputy director at the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project, stated, “More than 800 service sites were unable to provide Title X services. Hundreds of thousands of patients were unable to get Title X services. So the impact was tremendous.”

Abortion Restrictions Affect Fertility Treatment Outcomes, Study Says

Newsweek, January 13, 2026

A new study found that states with restrictive abortion laws are associated with significantly worse health outcomes for patients who conceive through fertility treatments. According to a study by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University, states enforcing targeted regulations of abortion providers show higher rates of serious maternal health complications among patients who used fertility treatments, compared to states without such restrictions. Dr. Molly Kornfield, the study’s lead author, stated, “People with highly planned and desired pregnancies may not be who we typically think of when we discuss the impacts of abortion restrictions, but their health and safety are being considerably impacted.”

ProPublica, January 14, 2026

A new report revealed the death of Ciji Graham, who was denied abortion care. Graham was pregnant while experiencing a chronic cardiovascular condition. She believed the best way to protect her health was to seek abortion care. However, she lived in North Carolina, which bans abortion after 12 weeks and requires an in-person consent visit three days before a termination. Graham voiced her concerns that her heart “was practically leaping out of her chest” to her providers, but none of them discussed her abortion options. ProPublica reported, “[t]hree doctors who have served on state maternal mortality review committees, which study the deaths of pregnant women, told ProPublica that Graham’s death was preventable.”
