Planned Parenthood Reopens in New Orleans

Axios, October 13, 2026

“Planned Parenthood reopens Wednesday in New Orleans after what it described as ‘political warfare’ forced its closure in 2025 … The clinic’s return comes just as the city is considering trimming its health programming, among other cuts aimed at navigating a budget crisis … Planned Parenthood’s New Orleans clinic represents an expansion of the national nonprofit sexual health provider’s Great Plains network. Planned Parenthood Great Plains stepped in last year after Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast announced plans to shut down its two Louisiana clinics, citing ‘relentless political assaults.’ Its clinics in New Orleans and Baton Rouge closed last September. ‘Louisiana community members and long-time supporters made clear last year that patients needed and deserved Planned Parenthood services in this state,’ said Emily Wales, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, in a statement.”

Raw Chicken, Malnutrition and Fear: The ‘Nightmare’ of Being Pregnant in an ICE Detention Camp

The Marshall Project, October 14, 2026

“In July 2025, an investigation from U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff’s office found that pregnant women in ICE detention reported not receiving proper medical care, were denied snacks and adequate meals, and were forced to sleep on the floor due to overcrowding. Across the country, ICE has come under fire for mistreatment of pregnant women and their babies. Judges have weighed in on whether or not ICE is even allowed to detain pregnant people, citing a 2021 policy largely barring the agency from doing so. ICE’s response to allegations of mistreatment and illegal detainment of pregnant people has been unclear and, at times, contradictory. It’s unclear exactly how many pregnant people are detained. Congress previously required DHS to release data on how many pregnant, postpartum and lactating people were detained each year. That ended in March 2025.”

Idaho Moms and Grandmothers Are Taking the Fight for Abortion Rights to Their Neighbors’ Doors

The 19th, October 13, 2026

“Idaho is the only state in this election cycle where voters could reverse an abortion ban. If Proposition 1 passes and the ban falls in November, legalizing abortion until the fetal viability line that typically falls around 23 to 25 weeks, it will be thanks to an army of people like the Wirschings – the residents who have found themselves compelled to politics because they don’t see how things can go on like this. Since federal abortion protections were overturned in 2022, citizen-led ballot initiatives to change or overturn abortion laws have popped up across the country. Highly organized, well-funded campaigns led to abortion bans being overturned in Arizona and Missouri and secured abortion rights in states such as Montana, Michigan and New York … The effort is largely powered by volunteers – neighbors speaking to neighbors about what the state’s abortion ban has meant to them, trying to bridge some kind of connection or understanding. They are predominantly older women, Idaho residents who say they fear how the state’s ban could affect future generations.”

The Fall of Roe Dramatically Changed Abortion Access. This Researcher Used Reddit to Capture How

STAT, October 9, 2026

“Her new focus was tracking emerging barriers to abortion access in real time and examining the role of online resources in connecting people with evidence-based health information and services … Pleasants and her colleagues plumbed thousands of posts from the Reddit forum r/abortion using natural language processing (NLP) – a type of computational analysis used to identify patterns in human language – alongside a qualitative close reading of a subset of posts. Through this dual approach, grounded in safeguards for user privacy, Pleasants is defining a framework for using artificial intelligence tools without losing sight of the context, complexity, and people behind the data. Findings by Pleasants and her colleagues reaffirmed well-established barriers to access, including high costs and limited appointment availability, while also revealing lesser-known challenges, such as delays in receiving abortion medications by mail, low credibility of online ordering platforms, and concerns about the legal risks of seeking abortion or related medical care.”

How Abortion Access Organizations Are Adapting to AI

Prism, October 8, 2026

“Leaders of abortion access organizations told Prism that over the last 12 months, there has been an uptick in AI chatbot summaries directing people seeking information about abortion to their organization’s websites. Previously, such organizations relied on search engine optimization (SEO) to improve their website’s visibility and ranking on search engines such as Google or DuckDuckGo. Until recently, they were not worried about how large language models (LLMs) might scrape and summarize online information about their work. But a lot has changed in just a few short years. This rapid shift in the information landscape has pushed abortion access organizations to reformulate their approach to online discoverability. At the same time, movement leadership, researchers, and organizers told Prism that they are also deeply concerned about AI’s proliferation of false or misleading information and politically driven information summaries. An anti-abortion political landscape that coalesces with a new age of information access has also created new concerns about privacy, they said.”
