After Decades of Waiting, Watered-Down Overtime Rule an Insult to Working People

“The final overtime rule announced today by the Department of Labor is an affront to working people, women and families. It is another sign that this administration continues to appease corporate interests at the expense of those who work for a living. The badly-weakened rule is well under the threshold of $47,476 proposed by the previous administration and only increases the salary threshold for receiving overtime to $35,568 — making it far less impactful.

Meaningfully updating wage and hour protections that had been allowed to erode for decades could have provided an economic lifeline to millions of workers and families, helped to end worker exploitation and advance fair pay. Instead, the administration settled on a rule that will leave behind more than 8 million workers — including 4.2 million women and 2.9 million people of color — who would have received either new or strengthened overtime protections under the 2016 Obama-era proposal, according to the Economic Policy Institute.”
