An Outraged Nation Looks to Congress to Restore Women’s Birth Control Coverage; “Congress Cannot Act Quickly Enough to Right This Wrong,” Women’s Leader Says

“The nation was shocked and appalled last week when a U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowed some bosses to deny women coverage for birth control. That decision was a dangerous and outrageous intrusion that undermines women’s health, sanctions discrimination, and takes the country backward in profoundly harmful ways. Congress cannot act quickly enough to right this wrong.

We commend U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D – Wash.) and Mark Udall (D – Colo.) for introducing the Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference Act in the Senate, and Representatives Diana DeGette (D – Colo.), Louise Slaughter (D – N.Y.) and Jerry Nadler (D – N.Y.) for introducing it in the House. This bill would restore the contraceptive coverage requirement that the Affordable Care Act guaranteed and that women deserve to be able to count on and, similarly, would protect other health services from bosses who want to impose their beliefs on employees.

We urge the leadership in both houses to bring this legislation up for an immediate vote, and encourage every member of Congress to support it. Americans will not tolerate going backward on women’s health, and allowing bosses to take away our coverage for birth control.”
