Press Release
Health Care Law Turns 1: Millions of Americans Benefitting From Patient Protections

With millions of American seniors, children, women, families and small businesses already benefiting from the Affordable Care Act’s much-needed popular patient protections— and with opponents of the law trying to take those benefits away — supporters are organizing a week-long effort to mark the first anniversary of the law on March 23.

Nearly two-hundred events and actions are taking place across the country with seniors, kids, small businesses, faith communities, and young people coming together to explain how they are benefiting from the law right now and to highlight what is at stake as opponents of reform work overtime to take away those benefits and put insurance companies back in charge of health care decisions for America’s families. Each event will demonstrate that now is the time to move forward and protect our care from those who would take away pre-existing condition protections, prescription drug cost reductions, and the option to keep young adults on your family’s plan until age 26.

The week of March 21 — 25 will feature nearly 200 events in 35 states including small business roundtables/workshops, senior’s town hall meetings, young adult information sessions, press conferences with Members of Congress and Administration officials and more. Event details will be released before each theme day:

Monday, March 21: Moving Forward, Protecting Small Business’s Care
Tuesday March 22 Moving Forward, Protecting Seniors Care
Wednesday March 23: Moving Forward, Protecting Patient’s Rights
Thursday March 24: Moving Forward, Protecting Women’s Care
Friday March 25: Moving Forward, Protecting Young Adults’ Care

Events will be sponsored by grassroots organizations, advocates and policy leaders including: Alliance for Retired Americans, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Americans United for Change, Campaign for America’s Future, Community Catalyst, Doctors for America, Families USA, Health Care for America Now (HCAN), Herndon Alliance, Main Street Alliance, MomsRising, National Council on Aging, National Partnership for Women & Families, National Women’s Law Center, PICO National Network, ProgressNow, Progressives States Network, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Small Business Majority, Universal Health Care Action Network (UHCAN), USAction, US PIRG, Vote Kids, Young Invincibles.

An online campaign effort featuring videos of real Americans benefiting from the law will complement the grassroots activities and a targeted radio advertising campaign and social media advertising touting the benefits of the law will also be launched as part of the week long effort.
