Health Expert Lauds Proposed CMS Rule to Make Medicare Claims Data Available to Consumers and Employers

“We commend the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the rule published today, which can help advance a more transparent health care system — something our nation urgently needs. This rule is an important step to improve care in our country.

Measuring and publicly reporting on the quality of health care and the performance of providers is critically important. Measurement provides valuable information and public reporting drives rapid improvements. Put simply, what gets measured and reported gets improved.

Consumers are entitled to full information — robust, reliable data — so they can make the best possible decisions about their health and health care dollars. That is only possible when we have transparency, which this new rule will promote.

Payers and the health care system as a whole need good information so we can reward and incentivize better quality care, and move toward better value health care — care that is higher quality at lower cost.

The Campaign for Better Care is working to improve care for the oldest and sickest patients. We recognize quality measurement reporting as essential to achieving our mission. We thank the Administration for taking this important step and moving us toward a more transparent, better quality health care system.”
