Press Statement
Privacy Rights for All Americans at Stake As U.S. Supreme Court Considers Abortion Ban

“Today, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments in a case that may help determine whether our daughters and granddaughters will be able to make their most personal health decisions without government intrusion.

The federal abortion ban passed by Congress is clearly unconstitutional — as well as callous and dangerous — because it does not contain an exception for a woman’s health. If it is allowed to stand, health care providers may no longer be able to choose the safest possible method of terminating a pregnancy. The Supreme Court struck down a nearly identical Nebraska law in 2000, and three federal appeals courts have struck down this ban. This Supreme Court must do the same.

During their confirmation hearings, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito assured Senators that they would respect precedent and protect individual liberties if they were confirmed. This will be a major test of whether that testimony was truthful.

The Court should strike down the federal abortion ban and refuse to allow government to make decisions that rightfully belong to women and their doctors. Privacy rights for all Americans are at stake.”
