Statement of Jocelyn Frye, President of the National Partnership for Women & Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 29, 2023 – “The National Partnership for Women & Families is saddened to hear of the passing of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. Senator Feinstein was a dedicated public servant and proud champion of our country’s women and families. She was a trailblazer, firmly committed to serving the people of California and our nation throughout her decades in the United States Senate, making history as the longest-serving woman senator.

“Senator Feinstein was a force to be reckoned with and never backed down from a fight. In the Senate, she quickly garnered the respect of her colleagues on both sides of the aisle as a steady, determined, and fearless voice for the issues she championed. She was a leading voice in the movement for gun safety, introducing and helping to pass the assault weapons ban and leaving a legacy on which much of the modern anti-gun violence movement was built. As the first woman to hold many positions in California and the federal government – including becoming the first woman to be mayor of San Francisco and the first woman elected to the Senate from California – she broke down countless barriers. And she was a fierce defender of women’s rights on so many issues, from defending access to reproductive health care to combatting discrimination against women in the workplace to safeguarding women from domestic violence and sexual assault.
