Press Statement
‘A Trumpster Fire’

“Responsibility for the government shutdown that began last night lies squarely with President Trump and congressional leaders who have spent the last year pursuing their extreme anti-woman, anti-worker, anti-immigrant, anti-civil rights agenda while ignoring their fundamental responsibilities and urgent national priorities.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program should have been funded months ago. President Trump should not have ended the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program. Congress should already have passed adequate funding for disaster relief and put a FY2018 budget in place.

Instead, Congress and the administration prioritized huge tax cuts for the wealthy, sabotaging our health care, and partisan grandstanding. Pitting children’s health against immigrant rights is deplorable, as is shutting down the government, which will cause chaos and suffering. The failure to pay servicemembers that will result from this shutdown is unforgivable.

This very week, President Trump promised to sign a bipartisan agreement on DACA; the very next day, he reneged on that promise. This shutdown results from his failures and his misplaced priorities. It is a Trumpster fire and hundreds of thousands of women are marching in protest of his leadership all across the country today. The resistance will continue.”
