“Today, a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives joined the Senate in voting for S. 5, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which would allow federal funds to support stem cell research. This bill would move research forward and promote medical advances critical to women as patients and as caregivers. It should become law.
Until now, federal stem cell policy has severely limited the advancement of promising stem cell research. The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act establishes strict ethical guidelines for the conduct of this research, while providing hope for millions of Americans struggling to care for a parent with Alzheimer’s disease, a child with juvenile diabetes, or a spouse with heart disease, or fighting their own battle with cancer.
Today’s vote is a significant step forward for biomedical research. It is especially important to women, who are often the primary health care decision-makers and caregivers for their families.
The President’s previous veto has already delayed treatments and cures. Now is time for him to stand up for the millions of Americans who will benefit from the responsible research and medical advances this bill would fund. We strongly urge the President to promptly sign this legislation.”
