Women’s Leader Says Nation Would Suffer If Court Undermines Health Reform Law

“The court-watchers and pundits are hard at work trying to discern what the Justices meant with each question and comment this morning, but one thing is clear: The nation will suffer, and women and families will suffer, unless the Supreme Court upholds the Affordable Care Act.

The health reform law is the greatest advance for women’s health in a generation. When all its provisions take effect, it will: promote prevention; protect women from discrimination by insurers, prevent predatory practices like dropping our coverage when we get sick; ensure that those of us with pre-existing conditions like breast cancer or diabetes can get insurance; and improve the quality and coordination of our care. This law makes basic women’s health care, including birth control, mammograms and Pap tests, affordable for millions more women. When it is fully implemented, millions more Americans will be able to get the care they need when they need it, regardless of income, employment, age, health and other factors.

Millions of women are already benefiting from free preventive services, the elimination of lifetime limits on coverage, the ability to keep children on their parent’s insurance plan until age 26, by saving money on prescription drugs, and much more. And many more tangible benefits that make a huge difference for women and families are just ahead.

The National Partnership’s new Facebook action, Ten Things to Love About the Affordable Care Act, is giving thousands of Americans the chance to speak out on all the provisions of health reform that are making a difference in their lives — and they have a lot to say. Our volunteers and staff were at the Court this morning, carrying signs with slogans suggested by our activists.

Americans need the Supreme Court to protect our care by upholding this law.”
