Statement of Jocelyn Frye, President of the National Partnership for Women & Families
WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 5, 2025 – “Yesterday, voters across the country made their voices heard, sending a clear message about the policies they want and need, and repudiating the aggressive rollbacks that have undermined women’s rights and progress. In bellwether elections in Virginia and New Jersey, huge numbers of voters turned out for the first major election since last year’s Presidential contest. Voters affirmed their support for candidates who will protect women’s reproductive freedom and who stand with working people to advance economic security and equal opportunity.
“It’s exciting that for the first time ever Virginia will be led by a female governor, Abigail Spanberger, as well as female Lt. Governor, Ghazala Hashmi. Hashmi will also be the first Muslim and the first South Asian American to serve in this position.
“In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill who won the Gubernatorial seat will add to the growing list of female Governors around the country.
“And in state legislatures in both states, the number of women candidates up and down the ballot was an encouraging sign that women continue to see the value in running for office to change the policies that impact our lives.
“Here at the National Partnership, we look forward to working with all elected officials who stand ready to advance a vision to improve the lives of women and their families. That means advancing paid family leave so people can take time off to care for their loved ones without fear of losing their pay or jobs. It means ensuring that women have access to high quality affordable health care that includes abortion and reproductive care. And that means ensuring that women who go to work and care for so many others in their lives and communities, are treated fairly and have the support systems they need to thrive on the job and at home.”
