“It has been 43 years since the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic ruling in Roe v. Wade – a decision that has improved women’s health, protected women’s privacy and enhanced women’s economic security in profound and immeasurable ways. Despite its unmatched role in advancing women’s dignity and equality, Roe remains under attack and the rights it guarantees are in peril.
In 2015, state lawmakers passed 57 new laws restricting women’s access to abortion care, bringing the total number of abortion restrictions passed in a five-year period to 288. Anti-choice extremists in Congress prioritized their political agenda above the health and well-being of women and families, voting time and again to make it more difficult for women to access birth control and abortion care, including by defunding Planned Parenthood. And this year, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the outcome of which could redefine abortion rights law for a generation. There could not be more at stake for women’s health.
But we also have an incredible opportunity to reclaim Roe and all it means for future generations. That’s why we urge the U.S. Supreme Court to reaffirm women’s privacy, dignity and equality by striking down Texas’ dangerous abortion restrictions when it rules in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. That’s why we encourage our pro-choice champions in state legislatures and in Congress to ensure that Roe is a right women can exercise regardless of their income, age, who provides their health insurance or where they live. And that’s why we will continue to fight tirelessly for laws and policies that help secure for all women in this nation the dignity that Roe promised 43 years ago.”
