Press Statement
Congress Should Prioritize Passage of Women’s Health Protection Act

“At a time when anti-choice lawmakers at the state and federal levels continue their relentless attacks on women’s access to abortion care, the re-introduction of the Women’s Health Protection Act is a welcome and positive step. If passed, this legislation would prohibit states from interfering with the relationship between a woman and her health care provider.

When politicians play doctor, that’s bad medicine. State legislatures shouldn’t be in the business of limiting women’s reproductive rights. The Women’s Health Protection Act would prohibit callous regulations that prevent women from accessing abortion care and making their personal health decisions.

If enacted, the Women’s Health Protection Act would allow women to make their own personal health care decisions regardless of where they live, and protect the relationship between a woman and her health care provider. It is fitting for this bill to be introduced during this week when we commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that recognized women’s rights to privacy and to choose abortion.

We are grateful to Senators Blumenthal and Baldwin and Representatives Chu, Fudge and Frankel for championing this legislation and urge both the Senate and House to pass it.”
