“Today the Trump administration continued its ongoing assault on the health and well-being of millions of women and families in our nation by cruelly gutting the Health Care Rights Law (Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act), which protects people from suffering discrimination in health care. At a time when our country’s deep structural inequities have come into sharp relief as the Covid-19 pandemic rips through communities of color and other low-income communities with disproportionate lethal force, the last thing the federal government should do is facilitate more misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism in health care.

This dangerous decision directly imperils people and communities that were already struggling with health inequities even before the pandemic hit. Telling health care providers and insurers that mistreating and even denying care to human beings based on their gender, the color of their skin, who they love, the language they speak or their reproductive history is inconceivably malicious. Now is the time to make it easier and safer for people to receive the health care they need—not the opposite. Our nation’s women and families deserve far better.”
