Press Statement
National Partnership Calls on Senate Republicans to Advance Gun Legislation and Condemn the President’s Racist Policies

“Thoughts and prayers are no longer enough. As we mourn the deaths of brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and numerous loved ones who died this past weekend we must honor their memory with real action.

We can no longer be a country that ignores the threat of home grown white nationalist terrorism and we can no longer pretend to ignore the connections between this movement and the president’s hate-filled policies and rhetoric; policies that scapegoat immigrants and people of color and incite violence and hatred in order to gin up his base.

We also can no longer ignore our country’s gun problem. Left out of the headlines was the news that Chicago experienced the most violent weekend this year with several deaths and injuries reported. Often lost in the conversation is how communities of color are disproportionately impacted by our lax gun laws and this violence is compounded by a history of racism and historic policies such as redlining.

The National Partnership therefore joins partner organizations including Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action to call on the Senate, led by Sen. Mitch McConnell, to come back from recess and to pass gun safety legislation. We also stand with organizations led by people of color including groups like United We Dream, Black Lives Matter who have long been leading the fight against white supremacy. It is time for all progressive organizations to have your back.”
