Press Statement
Ness Praises Senate for Rejecting Filibuster Strategy on Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Urges Speedy Passage with No Weakening Amendments

“It is a most welcome sign of a new era that the Senate rejected the filibuster strategy and voted to move the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act forward by a count of 73 to 23.

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is a modest and targeted measure that will restore the law to what it was before the U.S. Supreme Court’s damaging ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which contradicted decades of case law and made it nearly impossible for victims of wage discrimination to seek justice in the courts.

At a time when families are struggling mightily in the worst economy this nation has seen in decades, it is more important than ever that we reject wage discrimination and ensure that victims can seek redress in the courts.  We urge the Senate to reject any weakening amendments, and complete work on this bill very quickly so that President Obama can sign it into law next week.

Equal pay for equal work is among the most fundamental of American values.  Enacting this legislation will help stop wage discrimination and advance fair pay in America.”
