Press Statement
Repealing Individual Mandate Would Make a Terrible Tax Reform Plan Even Worse

“The Republican tax reform plan would be a windfall for the wealthy that punishes middle class, low-income and working families. It would increase taxes for millions of middle class families and give tax breaks to the richest people and corporations while adding a staggering $1.5 trillion, or more, to the federal deficit. In doing so, it would starve the government of the resources it needs to support essential safety net programs that most of us rely on.

What could possibly make this bill even worse? Using it to repeal the individual mandate – a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, which has been the greatest advance for women’s health in a generation. Doing so would leave 13 million people without health coverage, raise premiums for those fortunate enough to have health insurance at all, and undermine the stability of the health insurance marketplace.

It’s time for the Trump administration and leaders in Congress to stop trying to sabotage our health care, stop trying to help the rich get richer, and stop trying to deny women access to reproductive health coverage and care. Instead, they should focus on improving the health and economic security of this country’s working families.”
