Senate Vote on Unconstitutional Abortion Ban Shows ‘Total Disregard for Women’s Health,’ Ness Says

“The 51 Senators who voted for a national 20-week abortion ban today demonstrated total disregard for women’s health, well-being and constitutional rights. This bill is an unconstitutional ban on most abortions after 20 weeks. It is designed to deny women access to the health care they need and force doctors to choose between providing that care and going to prison. It is dangerous political interference with health care providers’ ability to give women the right care at the right time.

Leader Mitch McConnell’s decision to hold this vote is a shameful political calculation, coming at this time when Congress has failed to fund the government, protect DREAMers from President Trump’s callous decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and address scores of other urgent priorities.

We commend every Senator who voted against this latest attack on women’s health. It’s past time Congress move on from its extreme anti-abortion agenda and prioritize securing contraceptive coverage, expanding abortion access and improving the health, well-being and economic security of women and families.”

A fact sheet about the ban is available online here.
