Press Statement
U.S. House of Representatives Furthers ‘Extreme Agenda’ with Passage of Abortion Ban

“On the heels of their failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood, members of Congress today made clear they will stop at nothing to advance their extreme anti-abortion agenda by passing an unconstitutional abortion ban. This dangerous bill would interfere with a woman’s ability to get the care she needs, putting her health and well-being at risk.

Throughout a pregnancy, a woman must be able to get the care she needs. This shameful bill would jeopardize women’s health by interfering in the relationship between a woman and her health care provider and creating another onerous barrier to abortion access. Doctors would be forced to choose between caring for their patients and going to jail. The bill threatens providers with federal criminal penalties resulting in up to five years in prison, fines or both for providing care to patients when they need it.

This abortion ban would disproportionately harm women who face converging barriers that can push them later in pregnancy before they are able to access abortion care, exacerbating health disparities for women of color.

Politicians have no place in the exam room. Every woman in this country deserves access to abortion care without barriers. No member of Congress who truly cares about women’s health, well-being and economic security can possibly support this dangerous bill.”
