‘We Remain Optimistic’ that Courts Will Reject Attacks on Contraceptive Coverage, Women’s Leader Says

“Today’s opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court provides that the government can still ensure that insurance companies provide the contraceptive coverage all employees need and deserve while this case continues. While we are disappointed that the U.S. Supreme Court did not find for the government once and for all in Zubik v. Burwell, we remain optimistic that the lower courts will rule — quickly, clearly and decisively — for the government in this case, especially since eight out of nine lower courts have already upheld the accommodations in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ regulations.

Women could not have more at stake. These cases are attacks on birth control coverage and an attempt to use religion to discriminate against female employees. Our ability to access birth control is critical to our health, equality and economic security. It must be secured for every woman, no matter where she works or goes to school.

All women deserve access to contraceptive coverage, no matter where they work and what their bosses believe about birth control.”
