Press Statement
Women’s Health Leader Applauds House Committee for Protecting Genetic Information

“Genetic testing has enormous promise to improve the health of all Americans.  But this promise will only be realized if people trust that their genetic information cannot be used to deny them jobs or health insurance.

Today the House Ways & Means Committee took an important step toward realizing this promise by unanimously passing the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which will provide much needed protection against genetic discrimination.

Key committees in the House and Senate have now passed the measure by overwhelming margins.  We look forward to tomorrow’s expected mark-up in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, after which we hope leaders in both houses will quickly schedule floor votes.  Then President Bush should quickly sign the measure into law.

We urge the Congress and the White House to do everything possible to promptly enact this important, bipartisan legislation.”
