“The compromise reached in the New York City Council tonight appears to be a great step forward for the city. We applaud the speaker, lawmakers and advocates in New York City for reaching an agreement that will let approximately one million workers earn the paid sick days they need to recover from illness or care for their families, without jeopardizing their paychecks and their jobs. A strong coalition deserves great credit for its four years of work on this campaign.

With paid sick days in place in Connecticut, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Seattle and Portland, Oregon, and coming soon to New York City and, we hope, Philadelphia we may be at the tipping point in the effort to make this humane, common sense policy available to millions more workers. When workers can earn paid sick days, our families and economies are stronger and our communities more vibrant.

Now, it is time for Congress to take action to support working families and improve the public health by passing the Healthy Families Act, so workers all across the country can earn paid sick days. There is no time to waste.”
